Diversity Initiatives

Welcome to the Office of Residence Life Diversity Committee Web Page. The Diversity Committee seeks to help students understand themselves as unique and evolving individuals who have the capacity to make constructive changes in themselves and their environment. It seeks also to create a community of active and caring citizens who take responsibility for themselves and the world.

The Diversity Committee, through its programs and services, seeks to provide students with a balanced and diverse experience that will prepare them for life at the university and beyond. The Office of Residence Life expects to increase under represented groups in leadership positions (Resident Advisors-Senior Staff), celebrate diversity of students/cultures at Syracuse University, diversify the residence hall settings through the institution of randomized housing, create programs that support the development of all students, and provide opportunities for involvement, growth, and maturity.

In addition, the Office of Residence Life seeks to create a climate that is welcoming, inclusive, and open to the varying populations of students that attend Syracuse University by providing programming opportunities that allow for dialogue, interaction, and perspective-taking.

The Office of Residence Life also seeks to maintain those programs and plans already in existence (MLLC, Diversity Committee, Dream week, etc.), while in the process working to improve them and create more opportunities for a diverse student body. In accordance with the vision of the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Residence Life would like to be known for their commitment to student development and individual success.

With all of this in mind, the Office of Residence Life will attempt to create an environment that will promote intentional learning experiences, individuality of person, and an active celebration of individual uniqueness (2000 and Beyond Think Piece, 2000).
